Opportunity Green: Josh Dorfman, An Interview October 16, 2007
What was your inspiration for starting Vivavi? How is it helping to spread your vision of “sexy sustainability”?
I lived in China during the mid 1990’s where I worked as the business manager for Kryptonite Bicycle Locks. The more I traveled throughout the country to set up our product distribution channels, the more I saw with my own eyes how China was rapidly transforming from a nation of a billion bicyclists to a nation of a billion car drivers. I knew that China was pursuing the American model of economic growth because it’s the most successful model ever for a large country. But I also felt in my gut that a billion more cars on the planet is not going to be sustainable to the degree that we all aspire to lead the highest quality lifestyles possible. Read Full Article

His two-year-old company was one of the first to carry the Brooklyn-based Scrapile line—tables and chairs, built out of discarded shreds of wood which would otherwise end up in landfills. "Green furniture is finally becoming relevant," Dorfman says. "In the beginning, everything was so granola. Recently I saw some eco-friendly pieces appear in Lucky magazine; it's such a change. Before they'd be limited to a publication like, I don't know, Hippies Are Us." Read Full Article

Brooklyn, NY (1 June, 2005) Beginning this June, a new radio show will explore the emerging possibilities for effortlessly greening our modern lifestyles. The Lazy Environmentalist will be broadcast on the VoiceAmerica™ Network, the destination for live internet talk radio, as a source for style savvy consumers interested in protecting the planet without skimping on design.
From eco-fashion and sustainable furniture, to hybrid cars and solar charging backpacks, the last few years have witnessed an explosion of ecologically-minded activity within the design community. The Lazy Environmentalist will highlight the products and services as well as the designers and entrepreneurs who are making the modern green lifestyle a reality. Josh Dorfman, founder and CEO of Vivavi.com, a destination for contemporary, eco-friendly fashion, furniture and furnishings, is the host and co-creator of the show.
“Most of us care strongly about the environment and most of us are pretty lazy when it comes to doing something about it,” says Dorfman. “Now it’s not only easy, but totally cool and design-driven.”
Each week an hour-long episode will cover a different aspect of contemporary green living including eco-fashion, sustainable furniture, green building and architecture, eco-travel, and sustainable transportation. Dorfman’s guests will be the designers and entrepreneurs who are actively pushing sustainable living into the mainstream.
“The idea of integrating environmental principles into mainstream products and services has been circulating within the design community for a long time." says Dorfman. “However, it’s just within the last couple of years that the forces of technology, commerce and environmental necessity have begun to align in ways that enable more and more eco-designers to move from concept to prototype to saleable product, be it a shirt or sofa or high-rise apartment building.”
The Lazy Environmentalist will air on Mondays at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the VoiceAmerica™ Health & Wellness Channel. Listeners can tune in at www.health.voiceamerica.com. The show begins on Monday, June 6th with initial guests to include Graham Hill, founder of Treehugger.com, the definitive online source for modern, green lifestyle trends. Treehugger’s network of global writers continually combs the planet for cutting-edge, environmentally responsible products and ideas.
The first episode will also feature David Hermance, Executive Engineer for Environmental Engineering at Toyota Technical Center U.S.A (TTC). Representing one of The Lazy Environmentalist’s key themes – sustainable transportation -- David will discuss hybrid automobile developments at Toyota and throughout the automobile industry and offer a glimpse into the nation’s sustainable driving future.
Aligning contemporary design with environmental responsibility is a focal point for Dorfman who launched Vivavi.com in 2003 for that express purpose. Vivavi.com -- The Eco-fashion Destination
Brooklyn, New York (March 14, 2005) Environmental consciousness is the hottest look for spring. Seen on the runways of Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg during New York’s recent fashion week and reported by Newsweek [March 14, 2005] as the current trend, eco-fashion has arrived. Unflattering hemp clothes are passé, it’s now possible to save the planet in style. Vivavi.com is the source for everything eco-chic. Cutting edge designs and contemporary home furnishings do double duty at this ultimate destination for a fashion-forward, environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Vivavi.com founder and CEO Josh Dorfman and Creative Director Cindy Bryant have assembled a collection of the best in eco-design -- fashion for women, men and baby, contemporary home furnishings, bath and body and household care. Each brand supports environmentally friendly and socially conscious practices using only natural, organic or recycled materials and purchases from select collections donate a percentage of their profits to environmental organizations.
Sleek, modern styling dominates this season. Ecoganik lights up spring with bright T’s, flirty skirts and feminine blazers in a multitude of organic fabrics -- while Stewart+Brown’s eco-driven wrap skirts, lengthened Tees and two-layer shells unite fashion with environmental function. The looks are earth-friendly and runway chic, yet perfect for everyday living. Helping the planet no longer requires that “we wear clogs and a burlap sack,” says Dorfman.
The fashion conscious can now match their concern for what they put into their bodies – have you seen the lines at Whole Foods lately? -- with what they put on their bodies. Organic clothing is free from the pesticides and insecticides used to grow ordinary fibers and is often tinted with low-impact dyes that prevent toxic runoff into the water and food streams.
Vivavi.com makes it easy to do the right thing and look great doing it.
