The New Energy Economy

In a world of uncertainty where terrorism, job outsourcing and. global warming are very real and threaten our way of life, there is a solution. There is one answer so obvious that it is perhaps frightening in its simplicity. This generation of Americans will be measured by posterity along one sole criterion; did we act when the solution presented itself?

If we as Americans are prepared to recapture our destiny and build a better future then this is what we must do. We must free ourselves of our dependence upon foreign oil and we must advance our strategic energy industries of solar, wind, biomass and hydrogen. In short, we must build the new energy economy.

The new energy economy will create millions of jobs at home. Yes, that’s right, millions of jobs. We will need factories and American worker know-how to build the next generation of solar panels and wind turbines. We will require thousands of scientists and engineers to expedite the development of these technologies. We will need hundreds of thousands of trained technicians to build the new American energy infrastructure, to install solar and wind technologies on our buildings and lands, jobs that no amount of globalization can outsource. We will become so competitive in these emerging global industries that we will export our energy products and perhaps even our energy surplus to the other nations of the world.

The new energy economy will free our country to seek alliances and friendship only with countries that share our values. We will no longer be compelled to coddle authoritarian regimes in order to access their oil. As U.S. demand for oil dwindles, those same regimes will no longer have surplus oil revenue to funnel to the very terrorist organizations who fight our soldiers and threaten our nation. The new energy economy will strengthen our national security and make our citizenry more secure.

The new energy economy will stem the tide of destabilizing climate change. As America leads the nations of the world toward responsible stewardship of the planet, we will celebrate our great accomplishment of leaving the world better off than we found it for the generations that follow. We will restore species diversity, ensure the survival of vital medicinal plants, and preserve the natural beauty of that has inspired mankind through the ages.

The new energy economy will eradicate extreme poverty. The most destitute parts of the world will finally know what it is to have constant energy. Bringing solar energy to poverty stricken villages will enable water purification, refrigeration and lay the foundation for small enterprise to flourish. Extreme poverty will be wiped from the face of the earth within one generation.

Lastly, once we have achieved all of this, we will have set the stage for mankind to begin its next and perhaps boldest phase of exploration and discovery. With the power to harness abundant, everlasting energy sources, America will once again lead the world into space. This time it will be for keeps. We will experience travel at the speed of light and the stuff of our childhood dreams. It will no longer be fantasy. It will be our destiny.

The new energy economy is not a pipedream. It is our greatest opportunity, maybe even our only opportunity to ensure the American way of life. This is not a time for timid souls. Change is coming whether we want it to or not, and it’s coming fast. Billions of boys and girls from China to India to Russia and across Eastern Europe are surfing the internet, using Google to access the information highway and preparing to enter the global economy. That’s right, billions. Those kids are hungry and they’re ready to compete. The question is, are we?

Let this be the generation that takes on the fight. Let us champion the cause and we will triumph. After all, it is only upon our selves that we must each prevail. All that is required for America to realize this enterprise is that each of us courageously acts. The burden is shared among us and so too will be the satisfaction.

Fifty or sixty years from now our grandchildren and great grandchildren will question us like we did our own grandparents and great grandparents. Let that question not be, “Why didn’t you do anything when you had the chance?” Instead, let that question be,“Grandpa, tee time tomorrow is ten o’clock. On Mars. Who’s flying, you or me?”

Talking with Cheryl Terrace of Vital Design

We had a chance to bring Cheryl Terrace of Vital Design on to The Lazy Environmentalist earlier this afternoon. Here's much of the interview we did with her. You'll find she's a pretty extraordinary green interior designer.
1) Give us some easy tips that we can all use to create a healthier, more eco-friendly home environment.
The first thing that we need to understand is that HOME is an extension of self. Everything starts with awareness. If we truly start loving ourselves-loving our homes becomes an extension of that energy. It’s applying the principals of yoga for the home. OK, some tips:
How about something simple like BREATHING?Deeply… HOW does your home smell? We have a deeply emotional connection to scent. Think of some wonderful childhood smells. For me -I smell fresh mown grass, or chocolate chip cookies and I go back to being 12! Smell is often a sense that gets over looked in the home- but is VITAL to our sense of well-being.
-Open the windows for fresh air.-Burn beeswax (which cleanses the air) or soy candles- they come in many delicious scents.-I burn incense (nag champa- not sweet)-Have plants! Ivy, prayer plants, spider plants are wonderful air purifiers.-Flowers- I have stargazer lilies in my bedroom and even walking past that room I smell them- it is intoxicating. -Use essential oils instead of perfumes. -Switch to non-toxic cleaning products- who wants to smell a bleach blast? Method makes grapefruit mandarin bathroom cleaner that smells so fresh and clean. We can do this awareness exercise with all of our senses- sight, sound, touch. But we don’t have enough time!
2) Tell us about some of your projects. What's your interior design philosophy? What have you done for your clients? What's the process like? What's been the impact on their lives and the way they live?
My clients and projects vary from city spaces to country homes however all of my clients are fantastic! They understand the importance of creating a healthy home- for the body mind and soul. By VITALIZING THEIR HOMES THEY ARE VITALIZING THEIR LIVES. We all know when we are at our best full of energy and happy. We all also know when we are tired, lack luster and feel beaten up. VITAL DESIGN creates a home that serves you. Let your home be a sacred place that recharges you. So that you can be your absolute best every day. VITAL DESIGN LTD TRANSFORMS ORDINARY LIVING SPACE INTO EXTRAORDINARY LOVING SPACE.
The Process? Josh, when people work with me and engage VITAL DESIGN they embark on a fun, creative journey of transformation. I get their creative juices flowing- after all, it is THEIR space, not mine. I make it exciting and am with them every step of the way. I get testimonials all the time about how much their lives have improved and how much happier they are once they were VITALIZED.
3) You market yourself as the Green Goddess. You've been living and promoting these ideas for a long time. What do you see as your roll giventhe increasing interest in all things green?
I definitely ‘walk the walk’. I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years and do yoga almost every day. I’ve been called a crunchy granola hippy chick years ago so ECO CHIC GREEN GODDESS is perhaps a more mature version. GODDESS ENERGY IS ABOUT NURTURING ENERGY AND I AM VERY NURTURING. I have been in the design business for over 15 years so I have the experience and knowledge that comes with this multi-dimensional industry. I know all of the sources- some secret design sources-along with the right people to make each space unique and beautiful…and do it a holistic way. 4) You've pulled together what you refer to as The Dream Team when it comes to implementing green interior and development solutions. Who’s on your team? How did you go about assembling the team? What's the value for the client? Do you see the team expanding and does this relate to your future plans?
THE GREEN DREAM TEAM! VITAL DESIGN LTD is dedicated to health, both for the client and for the planet. With this in mind I’ve assembled the leading experts in various disciplines so that VITAL DESIGN can fully manage all aspects of the design process- end to end- with the highest standards.
Robert Politzer is my contractor. He is LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and this week he’s getting The HEALTHY HOME certificate from the American Lung Association. He will be the only contractor in New York City with these credentials.
Wayne Tusa is the founder of Environmental Risk and loss Control. He has over 30 years of environmental experience and provides testing for various toxins in the home such as mold, asbestos, lead paint. He also does complete air and water assessments. He then provides remedial solutions.
Paul Novack owns Environmental Construction Outfitters the Green Home Depot! He has a store here in New York and has recently opened one in Austin Texas. He offers state of the art building products, services and technologies.
VITAL DESIGN LTD has the unique ability to bring together these INTEGRITY focused professionals and provide the very best principals in healthy design- from concept to completion.
I also work with a variety of craftspeople such as Amish cabinet-makers and individual artisans who are dedicated to their craft. This makes the house more than healthy- it sings! How’s health mixed with beauty for Value?
5) Clearly listeners interested in greening their interiors would be wise to contact you. What other resources are available for people in this area? Are there solutions to fit every budget?
There is a wealth of resources out there. Healthy design publications, web resources and books. Or just contact me at www.vitaldesignltd.com to start the VITALIZATION PROCESS!

IdealBite - small eco bites that make a big difference

Sometimes a great idea is just waiting for technology, know-how and, well, the world to catch up to it. IdealBite is such an idea. Building upon the model made popular by DailyCandy, IdealBite delivers cool and innovative daily email tips for integrating environmentally sustainable products and practices into our modern lifestyles. The traditional environmental movement has faced two major hurdles in its efforts to reach a broad audience: 1) how to educate without preaching and 2) how to break environmental issues down to the individual level where they are less overwhelming and consequently more actionable. IdealBite's formula works because it offers enticing solutions for generating massive results in small, individual increments.
From a business model perspective, Jennifer Boulden and Heather Stephenson, IdealBite's co-founders, are onto something clever. Users sign up to receive daily tips and can also elect to review products and services of companies who want to understand the green consumer. The founders are building a company that enables consumers to be "in the know" about cutting-edge green products and services, while at the same time, they're helping companies gain the critical market research needed to thrive in the green marketplace.

A Vivavi Brooklyn Showroom?

We’ve been exploring the idea for some time now about opening a showroom for our products especially our furniture. We’re getting closer to making it happen so that our customers can fully experience our products before purchasing. Plans are in the works for an initial showroom at our headquarters in Brooklyn.

We are one stop into Brooklyn on the L subway line from Manhattan and right off the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. I mention this because I would be very interested to learn whether you would visit our showroom given this information about our location.

Are you:
1) interested in seeing our products (especially our furniture) in person
2) would you travel to our location in Brooklyn to see them

I’d love to hear your answers and invite you to send them to me directly at jdorfman@vivavi.com>online survey.

Wiggers' Solomon's Desk to be Auctioned for World Wildlife Fund

John Wiggers is a pioneer in the field of contemporary, sustainable furniture. On Earth Day in 1998, John was among the first furniture designers to receive sustainable certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). His evolutionary vision for what furniture can embody is informed by his experience working in leadership positions for the FSC and his travels among indigenous peoples around the world.

At Vivavi, we get excited about designers who are creating contemporary, environmentally conscious products that let us easily green our modern lifestyles. For this reason alone, we're thrilled to be carrying John's collection. Yet, John adds a third variable to that equation. His works also often embody holistic healing and design principles consistent with the precepts of Feng Shui and the Vastu Shastra of the ancient Vedic tradition in India.

The prototype of his Solomon’s Desk is being auctioned off by the World Wildlife Fund with proceeds to benefit that organization as well as the work of the FSC. This stunning piece will be on display May 14 to 17 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair here in New York City. The event is open to the public on Tuesday the 17th.
